New Loop Night at The Forge

Friday 10 February @ The Forge, London
Monocled Man + Hanslip/Hurley/Sanders

Loop is proud to be hosting a new quarterly residency in association with The Forge in Camden, London. Details of the first event in this series follow...

Monocled Man
A powerful-new trumpet-led project from rising star Rory Simmons. Simmons steps out from his acclaimed Fringe Magnetic nonet to play some fiery post-jazz fusion. Downtown-ish new guitar/trumpet-led trio Monocled Man features Troyka axeman Chris Montague and Kairos 4tet drummer Jon Scott. These 3 exciting musicians have come together on this project to create a stripped down raw sound, somewhere between Tiny Bell Trio and Chicago Underground Duo.

“harmonically audacious phraseology and suave sound”

Mark Hanslip – tenor saxophone
Mike Hurley – piano
Mark Sanders – drums

Two of the new generation of UK improvisers combine with one of the established masters in the field to create an intense, free-flowing and melodic music that defies easy categorisation.

Mark Hanslip – "rapidly becoming one of the more original voices on the London improv scene"
Daniel Spicer, BBC Music

Mike Hurley – "..a truly thrilling pianist with a mercurial style full of lightning fast flights of fancy and melodic switchbacks.."
Jazzwise, 2009

Mark Sanders – "A gifted player capable of seamless movement between free-rhythms and propulsive swing."
John Fordham, The Guardian
