Robin Fincker

“excellent tenorist…a sax world somewhere between Wayne Shorter and Evan Parker”
John Fordham, The Guardian

"a musician deploying an impressive palette of talents."
Thierry Quenum, Jazz Magazine

French saxophonist and clarinettist Robin Fincker (7/7/1980) lived in London for over 10 years and now divides his time between the British and the French music scenes. He has studied at the Guildhall School of Music (London) and the Conservatoire Superieur de Musique de Paris (CNSMDParis).

A hyperactive project instigator and an in-demand sideman, Robin’s work is reflective of his taste for new experiences as well as his desire to draw from a musical spectrum that is freed from stylistic concerns, where Jazz cohabits with Improvised music, Electronic music or even Rock music

Since 2005 he co-leads Outhouse, which became one of the leading groups of the young London-based contemporaryJazz scene. He was also noticed through his other projects such as Blink (his trio with Pianist Alcyona Mick) or Splice, quartet of “post free-jazz” improvisers investigating the possibilities of the laptop and real time processing in composition and improvisation.

Keen on the idea of “bands” in music he is also a member of Farm Job, Vincent Courtois’ trio: The Mediums, Hans Koller large ensemble, Surnatural Orchestra, Fringe Magnetic, Mikkel Ploug/Simon Jermyn 4tet amongst others.

He has also shared the stage or recorded with the likes of Evan Parker, Bill Frisell, Hilmar Jensson, Vincent Courtois, Jeanne Added, Jeff Williams, Paul Rogers, Brian Irvine, Mike Gibbs, Eve Risser….

In the past years Robin has been performing extensively on the European contemporary Jazz scene and in many festivals including London Jazz Festival, Jazzdor Festival (Fr), Banlieues Bleues (Fr), Koktebel Jazz Festival (Ukraine), Cheltenham Jazz Festival (UK), Bray Jazz Festival (Irl).

His discography holds over 25 recordings including 7 as a leader/co-leader and his music was recorded several times for radio programs on BBC, Radio France or WDR.
In parallel to his activities as an instrumentalist and a composer, Robin is a founding-member of the Loop Collective in London, considered today as a major force on the British Jazz scene. In 2009 he was selected to take part in the Jerwood/PRSF Take V initiative, a career development scheme for young composers of outstanding potential. He has also been a guest teacher at the Guildhall School of Music, Birmingham Conservatoire and the Conservatoire National of Strasbourg, intervening on the themes of the relationship between composition and improvisation, the practice of the saxophone and Jazz in its various forms.

Projects (as leader)

  • Blink
Formed out of a long-standing collaboration between pianist Alcyona Mick and saxophonist/clarinetist Robin Fincker, Blink has been a trio since 2006 with percussionist/drummer Paul Clarvis.
  • Outhouse grew out of a shared desire to create music with equal input from each member, where the line between composed and improvised material can be blurred and redefined.
  • Beautifully stitching together two very different musical genres, Ruhabi displays a seamless blend of serrated jazz grooves, free-flowing melody, African polyrhythm and traditional Sabar drumming language.
  • Splice's raison d'être is to mesh together influences of contemporary jazz, free improv, loud and soft noise, punk grit, ambient music, and more... with seamless blends or blunt juxtapositions.

Projects (as sideman)

  • The Alex Bonney quartet perform original compositions with a range of influences from Don Cherry to Messiaen as well as exploring the passionate music of Albert Ayler.
  • Featuring some of the most exciting and dynamic young musicians from the London jazz, classical and improvised-music scenes, the project aims to fuse chamber and orchestral palettes and shapes with the vibrant energy of cutting-edge jazz.
